Remote IO devices are used to convert digital and analogue signals (volts or amps i.e 4-20mA) coming from sensors, to a serial protocol that is used to send the information to an Industrial/Embedded PC or PAC that monitors and controls the system. The transmission hardware can be RS485 or LAN or USB or Wifi etc. The serial protocol typically is DCON or Modus RTU or Modbus TCP or any of the other fieldbus standard such as Profibus, CAN bus etc.
