XP embedded (see 2.2.2) is a stripped down version of XP. It is stripped down to increase reliability while reducing storage space requirements, often allowing it to fit on a lower cost Compactflash device (see 2.18.1). The stripping down process is complex and creating the ultimate XPe installation Image for a specific hardware combination is a craft, which requires a lot of skill.
